Some Useful Information About Plain Bearings

I tested one of these for destruction and learned a few things that may be useful. 1) They are available from numerous suppliers. They all appear to be identical regardless of the provider. So go to someone you trust or someone who will give you the best price. They are probably all made in the same factory in China. 2) Most come with a bearing offset from the pillow block, usually horizontal but sometimes vertical. However, as many reviewers point out, this is a simple fix by clamping the bearing mount in a vise and aligning the bearing with a wide-bladed screwdriver. 3) The bearing itself is a custom size with an OD of 21mm. and an inner diameter of 8 mm. (Standard sized bearings used for other purposes, such as skateboard wheels, have an OD of 22mm and an ID of 8mm.) So don't plan to replace the bearing. 4) The bearing itself is sealed with a plastic ring and the inner balls are embedded in grease. Therefore, the addition of lubricant from the outside does not bring any benefit. 5) The bearings were stiff when I got them and didn't spin very freely. I was able to greatly improve the rotation by locking the 8mm rod into the bearing with the included set screws, clamping the bearing block itself in a vise, and then locking the 8mm rod into my drill motor. A minute or two of rapid rotation (in either direction) with the drill motor resulted in significant bearing release and much smoother rotation thereafter. With these settings, the bearings actually work very well.
