Amazing for the price. Ideal for casual amateur use.

Amazing for the price. I was thinking between this lens and 55-200mm. I've been looking at flickr photos of people who have taken these two lenses and personally I think the 55-200 looks fantastic. I was really dying to get it. But then I accidentally bought the 50-230mm for about $200 less than the 55-200mm. What the hell, I bought it. I didn't think the weight savings were that great. Whenever I use the 50-230 I also use the extra grip with my X-E2. I find that the camera is a bit unbalanced without the grip. So I think a 55-200 no shot camera would be more unbalanced. Optical stabilization is pretty good. However, it is not magic. You still need to have good technique. The sharpness is very good, not as good as the 55-200 in my opinion, but good enough if you're only posting images to the web or keeping images under 8x10. I find the f11 to be the best point in terms of sharpness, so it's really an outdoor lens for the day and you'll need to use a tripod indoors in low light. However, you still can't use Superzoom indoors. Bokeh is normal, acceptable. The plastic mount doesn't bother me. The zoom is pretty smooth. It's made in China but I'm not afraid of it falling apart. Feels well done. I have attached 2 pictures. Robin manual. Cow is indoors at 3am with 1 floor lamp and +1 tripod exposure. Added an image of a female cardinal and a 100% cropped blue swallow.

Pros
  • A dream come true
Cons
  • Worries me
