I don't sharpen valves but I do sharpen knives. This rubbing into the skin attached to the wood works extremely well to sharpen any blade. Cover and treat the leather surface completely for the first coat. Let dry and then sharpen. Add a little more composition with each sharpening. After all, there will be a lot of built-in connection and you rarely need to add it. If you're sitting at a nice dining table, newspaper under your sharpener is fine, if you're in your shop or outside, snap it.
