These are very functional PTC heaters and they work better than thin solid PTC heaters but they also require a bit more effort. Attention to detail for safe use. First, as suggested by others, I would throw away the plastic (no need to break it up like another reviewer suggested - just detach the top from the bottom). Be careful - if you use metal (including aluminum) for the body of the heating element - do not touch it with the two sides of the ceramic core. I've disabled my circuit breaker twice as a result. I wouldn't get this item unless you are electronics savvy and familiar with circuits, voltage and power. This will work very well - so we'll burn your house down if you're not careful. However, I definitely recommend this product.
