Really like this fountain. Quiet, easy to see what the water level is. The only difficulty I have with cleaning it, is trying to get the screen cover off the pump. YOU MUST clean the pump on a regular schedule, or it will just stop working from getting hair and other gunk in it, blocking the intake! We have one cat, and I clean the whole thing twice a month. If you have more cats, you'll have to clean it MORE frequently. I'm betting that the people who said it stopped working after only having it for a short time, weren't cleaning it as often as needed. Regarding the water plate that holds the little carbon packets. I took the packets out. I think most water out of the faucet, is fine for cats, without running it over these packets. Besides, you can save yourself some money, by not having to replace those drip plates! Just clean the drip plates off when you do your maintenance, and you're good to go!
