On hot days, old Miatas very often have exhaust smell inside. This inexpensive, easy-to-install part usually solves the problem. Remove the old hose and use sandpaper to clean the metal filler neck and the metal pipe that goes to the gas tank. Clean metal pipes, apply fuel-resistant sealant to pipes, tighten clamps, done. When I did this job I had about 1/2 tank of gas in the tank and when I removed the hose there were no leaks. Now the car smells like leather, not gasoline. Cheap repair.
