Review on Deck Plus Wood Screws 48422 by Christian Byrd

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Thoughtful design. Well done. Costs money.

These are well made and finished decking screws with features not found in other products in this category. Before deciding if these screws are the best for your project, it's important to understand the benefits of these different features. Starting from the top, you will notice an asterisk or asterisks. It can reasonably be assumed that 6 dots on a star is more than 4 dots on a Phillips screwdriver. Since more is better, the Torx will outperform its ancestor. The truly radical element of this design, however, is the almost complete lack of any taper on the bit. The Phillips screwdriver bit is actually designed to pop out of its corresponding notch as it tapers towards the tip. The walls of the Torx slot are almost perpendicular to the end of the screw. This allows much more torque to be transferred to the screw without the risk of slipping. Since you want the screw to drill a hole in the wood, not the drill bit, this is an important advantage. . A standard wood screw will have its sloped surface sanded smooth since you are expected to drill a pilot hole of approximately the same size and shape as the screw it will receive. If you screw in a regular wood screw with just a screwdriver and without a solid guide, the screw will protrude slightly from the surface because there is no room for a metal cone. The screw simply compresses the wood like a nail. These Hillman brand screws have a beveled head face with six sharply protruding lugs or lugs. As the screw is driven, these springs scrape the wood to provide a suitable score so the screw can sink evenly or below the surface if necessary. The shaft has an aggressive thread pattern that will hold your project together securely. Because it is coated with a protective coating similar to Teflon, these screws are easy to screw in. This job is made even easier with the self-drilling tip, which is the latest feature of this excellent simple machine. It's that last feature, the self-drilling tip, that calls for caution. This item is a screw, no wonder. The shank of the screw is not designed to pull wood out of the hole. So if you drive them into the end of the board you still need to drill a pilot hole. It doesn't have to be countersunk, but you can't drive a wedge into the end of a board and expect it to splinter. I received nothing in return for this positive rating. I always rely on Revain reviews. This is my way of paying up front and a small attempt to reward the company for a job well done.
