Just got everything set up and working to use for fishing yesterday. I'm a serious angler and just want to fish without much effort no matter what the cost, within reason. I'm impressed and a little disappointed and frustrated. As the installation progressed, this became more and more frustrating. Conflicting information about which parts come with which device can be confusing. For ease of installation, I'm wondering if one of the more expensive models wouldn't be cheaper or even the same price because they work without an adapter. I thought it had a built in Lakemaster chip that would give me everything I need with all of its features. The integral basemap only shows contours in 10ft increments (Lakemaster shows 3ft increments) and there is no option to use Follow Contour without a Lakemaster chip. It pissed me off when I found out. I would buy a damn Lake Master chip if I knew. This is the main reason I bought this and the trolling motor. I think while it's amazing technology and the graphics are as good as advertised, a lot more information is needed from Humminbird. Check their website for adapter cables. That's ridiculous. This technology can help you with all the necessary cables and adapters. Adapter cables cost between $30 and $40, and the Ethernet cables themselves are also very expensive. These are all quality items, mind you. If you really want to network 2 sonars to run a trolling motor (ipilot link) you'll need an ethernet hub for around $260. Humminbird must have ingress and egress ports in order to network. Like a regular TV. You have one leg in the future and the other in the past. It reminds me of old Lionel train sets. They were expensive to begin with, and if you really wanted to have fun like the kids on TV or in magazines, you had to shell out more money. It's still an amazing device. I like other models with "Favorite View Buttons". I wish they were on Helix 7. That would make navigating between views a lot easier. I also wish I had gone for a bigger screen. A 7-inch screen is good, but if it's a bit bigger it's easier to see in split-screen mode. In general, Helix is very primitive compared to its more expensive counterparts. If you can afford it, get a 10 inch screen. I would also like to use the touch screen. Make sure you have a 32GB SD card so you can upgrade this thing. He NEEDS updates immediately. The Helix 7 was within my budget and I'm sure that if it doesn't break, I'll be able to enjoy this device for a very long time.
