When I received them they were folded in half although I had them upside down for a week trying to close them fold, did not really help. When I first installed them the center didn't stick, after about a week or two of constant stepping on the center by people pacing it finally made it stick. I love that they don't use glue, they're more like those rubber window decals that you can reapply over and over again. In fact someone asked me how they stay in place and I removed the corner and showed it to him, it left no marks and you could hear a nice peeling sound as I pulled it out. For what it's worth, I installed it on a natural wood staircase. In my case they leave no traces, stick well (although initially it took them some time to take root). And they're easy to grab if I need to replace one for some reason. So far they've been a great addition to deaden echoes in my hallways, but I'd still recommend not shipping them folded in half.
