Review on Tokina 11 16Mm AT X116 Digital Motor by Dragan Nelson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Sharp, but there are disadvantages

I don't often rate a lens. Instead I took a picture comparing this lens to my other lens e.g. B. a 35mm prime lens and a Nikon 55-300mm. For me personally, the sharpness of a lens is the most important thing when deciding to buy a lens for my camera. Of course, I prefer to spend as little as possible and still get a nice, sharp piece of glass. I like it - sharpness, like my 35mm Prime when the aperture is between f3.5 and f16. Image quality degrades at every aperture below f3.5 and at every aperture above f16. Sharpness at 11mm and 16mm. Good wide angle considering the price of the Nikon brand. The shine isn't that bad. There are a few highlights every now and then, but it won't ruin your pictures. Hating doesn't come cheap. For the price, I would expect a more efficient focus mechanism like the USM or HSM Manual Focus Clutch Ring to require too much force to operate. Would it hurt Tokina to use a switch like most lenses do these days? The autofocus isn't the best, but it works very well if you're using a center AF point on your camera. (The manual says to use the center focus point if you're reading it.) This is usually an issue with wide-angle lenses, so it's not a big deal. Conclusions. If you have something smaller, please send it back for another sample. It's also a bit heavier than my 55-300mm lens. IS, VR or OS that reduce blur isn't really needed by this lens due to its short focal length. Distortions come with territory, but they can be corrected in post-processing. Chromatic aberrations are barely perceptible. At f2.8 it still produces good images as you can see in the test image I uploaded below. The zoom range is not that useful. I think you could make this lens a prime lens and lower the price a bit. The test image I've uploaded below compares the sharpness of 3 of my lenses centered at different apertures. Shot at ISO 400 on Nikon D7200 with custom white balance. There was no retouching other than cropping. You can also see how each lens exhibits variations in color, although the white balance remains the same.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • No performance
