Georgia Research Alliance

The Georgia Research Alliance which can also be shortened as GRA is a unique nonprofit organization which brings together Georgia's research universities, business community and state government to create opportunities to grow Georgia's economy through scientific discovery.

Georgia reserach alliance Since its founding year in the year 1990, has focused its technology-based economic development strategy in three areas which are the recruitment of world-class scientific talent, the development of sophisticated research infrastructure and also the commercialization of university research and development.

The Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) was formed in 1990 as a collaborative research initiative among six major research universities in the state of Georgia, including Georgia Tech (Lambright, 2000). There is collaboration in establishing high-level research and technological strategies, in encouraging technology transfer, and in funding plans. This is an Atlanta, Georgia-based nonprofit organization that coordinates research efforts between Georgia's public and private sectors. While GRA receives a state appropriation for investment in university-based research opportunities, its operations are funded through foundation and industry contributions.

The Georgia Research Alliance also has a venture grant which the GRA’s commercialization grant program is dedicated to spinouts based on research from Georgia universities. The Phase 1 grants ($50,000) and Phase 2 grants ($100,000) to help Georgia Tech researchers reduce market and technical risk as they work towards commercialization of the technology. Georgia Research Alliance also offers a Phase 3 loan of up to $250,000 that is made directly to the spinout company once it has launched.

As research, GRA's programs have generated some $2.1 billion in new investment in the state and has also helped to generate some more than 150 new companies and created more than 5,500 new science and technology jobs.

The Georgia Research Alliance has heart and hub of the GRA strategy which is the nationally-recognized GRA Eminent Scholars program which Its purpose is to bring pre-eminent scientists to Georgia's research universities and provide them with the tools they need to lead research and development programs with the greatest potential for generating significant economic gains for Georgia and Georgians and they have make this to happen because Till date the program has recruited more than 60 GRA Eminent Scholars in diverse fields including vaccine development, molecular biotechnology, crop genomics, drug discovery, medical imaging, animal health and biomedical engineering.

This research alliance makes it a must that removing barriers to collaboration is a priority. It means recruiting faculty who can accelerate problem-solving. And it means encouraging researchers to think big, push boundaries and disrupt the status quo.

The Georgia Research Alliance grows Georgia's economy by expanding university research capacity and seeding and shaping startup companies around inventions and discoveries.

Georgia Research Alliance Creates opportunities to grow Georgia's economy in three main program areas which are Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholars, Centers of Research Excellence and Commercialization. These areas are not silos; rather, they intersect at multiple points to advance discovery and create economic growth.

Georgia Research Alliance announces $15 million effort to fight sickle cell disease. As at May 20, 2021 , A team from some of Georgia’s leading medical research institutions will soon embark on an effort to find new treatments and therapies for sickle cell disease.

Georgia Research Alliance governing board reflects a true alliance. Its members are respected leaders at companies, universities, foundations and government entities. The collaboration of these various sectors which traces back to GRA's earliest days is a major reason why the Alliance has been so effective for so long.
