EDIT >>>> Junk NOW they block the light, easy to install/operate and look nice and clean.

These are cheap and quick ways to dress up window curtains. If you want stunningly beautiful window decorations, this isn't it. You look good, but that's about it. They block the light completely. How close you cut them to the side window jambs and how tightly you tape the hat to the window on the jamb will reduce the amount of light that "sneaks" into the sides. Some light will happen. I've seen talk of cutting them to size with a kitchen knife, I found it very difficult and left bad/jagged edges. I used a chop or chop saw. I wedged the blinds between two blocks of wood to keep them from wearing out and everything worked great, just slow cutting. The honeycomb pleats were slightly sticky/melted due to this cutting method, but once hung it was easy to slowly release by pulling the curtain down. When it's hot or cold outside and I open them, I feel like the air between the back of the blinds and the window is much hotter/colder compared to the room temperature. That tells me they really help insulate from outside temperatures. We have had them in our old house for about 4 years and have now bought them for our new house. We only had one that started to develop a crack in the lower plastic rail, but I blame it on my kids being a little rough on them when lowering them. They have no exposed threads that could be dangerous for children/pets or a nuisance for adults. EDIT March 2017; It used to be 5 stars! The ones we had in the old house were great for at least 4 years. I bought the same what I thought. It seems to be the same, but has not lasted 1.5 years. You will not turn away. We don't even use them that often, so it's not misuse or abuse. They just don't retreat anymore and stay on their feet. So if you hold it so that you can open the window for a little breeze, a little breeze will break to shreds and twist them all. They changed something and are now junk. I still say they are easy to install and look pretty clean and nice the first time, but don't waste your time and hassle. It's not worth the low price. Also, I ordered a few more to complete the rest of the windows and they started to look different. It's not honeycomb anymore so it's not as insulating and you can see those pesky little spots of sunlight coming through the folds where the rope comes down through the folds of the shade. They don't even work anymore. If I have money, I'll pick the ones that haven't been used up and buy a better shade. I don't know what happened, but Shades Unlimited is ashamed of the loss in quality.
