They are significant, the surface is perfect for grating a medium block of cheese. The teeth of the grater are very sharp and fairly high, so the larger of the two graters will give you very large individual pieces of cheese. The feeling when the grid is stable and smooth, does not bend or slip. I love both cheese graters, the grater with the smaller holes is great for chopping citrus. I really like them, wish I'd bought them a long time ago instead of using a crappy low quality grater I got years ago.
