I was surprised at how small and light this book stand is. I figured there was some weighted material in the bottom so it could stand on its own. It's feather light, and if you have a large or heavy book you'll need to hold it down (which defeats the purpose) or prop it up with a pillow behind it. I used my Bucky heating pad and attached a book stand to it so it wouldn't tip over. One good thing I can say about this, the page holders worked well and it was easy to turn the pages while reading. I would recommend the company put some rice, buckwheat or other heavy grainy material in the base for more stability.
