Compared to the rather laborious process I've used with a French press in the past, this is a fairly easy way to make coffee. So I totally understand if the review readers disagree with me. However, I have found that the Hario Siphon Coffee Maker is much easier to clean and the coffee comes out smooth, strong and delicious (no grinding). Before purchasing this product, I suggest you consider some additional purchases to make things quicker and easier. The first thing I would recommend is replacing the included alcohol burner with a butane gas burner. In comparison, it burns clean and fast. Regardless of which burner you use, boiling cold or even room temperature water takes quite a while, so I'd also recommend boiling the water in a kettle first. If you don't already have a kettle, it's still good to have one. If you're switching from a French press to a siphon, chances are you already have one. Third, I would recommend replacing the included filter with a permanent coffee filter (Diguo sells one specifically for Hario). Cleaning and then soaking the supplied cloth filters becomes a challenge. The permanent filter is much easier to clean and does its job perfectly. Now that you have a kettle, a butane torch (I have a Yama Glass mini butane torch), and a permanent filter, you'll need to adjust the recipe a bit. The recipe that came with it was too weak for me. I basically doubled the recipe and then added another pinch of coffee. On my burr grinder, I set it to 8 cups on a medium grind. I stir the moment the water starts to flood the upper chamber, about 40 seconds after the upper reservoir is full, and again after I remove the heat source. It took me about 8 minutes to boil from kettle to siphon and cup. Now that I've read what I've just read, I realize how obsessed I am with coffee and how willing I am to change up my brewing method. until it's perfect. The Hario Siphon Coffee Maker is probably not for everyone, but I think it's safe to say that it's for anyone who loves coffee too much. Maybe I could use counseling and rehabilitation. If you don't care how your coffee tastes, settle for a coffee maker as long as it has caffeine in it. This method is about 5 stops down the rabbit hole. Let's start with the filling.
