yarn as art

I'm new to spinning so hand spinning is never perfect and even but it's fun and I like it. This book makes it possible to see the yarn itself as a work of art. It's amazing to see the colors and the interplay of the fibers when making a ball of yarn. Perhaps one can think yarn for yarn's sake. In fact, the section on what you can do with yarn is superfluous, as yarn loses some of its artistic qualities when turned into a functional item. She emphasizes that before you can make good synthetic yarns, you need to learn the basics of spinning as a good foundation. This is the basis of art, You must learn the basic elements of composition before you can create good abstract art. I probably would never slavishly copy anything in this book as that's really not its purpose. A book like this should inspire a fiber artist, or any artist, to think outside the box and see visually exciting things. One can imagine a very interesting pile of wild handwoven yarns in a contemporary bowl in a gallery setting. If the purpose of spinning is to make a hat, then it will turn out beautiful and even keep your ears warm. If fiber, used in an aesthetically interesting way, makes the viewer think that perhaps fiber can be a medium for real art and not just craft, then this book is inspirational.
