Review on ๐Ÿ“ถ Alfa AC1900 WiFi Adapter - High-Speed Long-Range Dual Band USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Network Adapter with External Antennas by Michael Glassburn

Revainrating 5 out of 5

lightning fast! Excellent assortment! But not for everyone.

I'm using this wifi adapter with Linux Mint 18 and it's great. If you're buying this for Linux, be sure to install the drivers. I'm using drivers from zebulon2/rtl8814au on GitHub. I suspect some Linux users left negative reviews because they had driver issues. The drivers are easy enough to install for most Linux users, but if the terminal intimidates you, I recommend checking out this GitHub repo before you buy it. With that in mind, here's my rating: The range is excellent. This adapter picks up Wi-Fi networks I've never seen before, and it does so with an amazingly strong signal. The range is particularly good when I attach the adapter to the window with the supplied suction cup. But I get 100% signal strength when connected to my home WiFi even with the adapter clamped over my monitor. The adapter works fast! It's faster than my hotspot. Checked the speed of iperf3. Another computer was connected via Ethernet. I measured 250 Mbps, which is the best my access point can do. I saw someone else measured 940+ Mbit/s. However, this is not optimal. Specifications are not detailed enough; They don't say if this adapter supports MIMO or MU-MIMO. It's quite large and unwieldy, although its size may be necessary to achieve excellent speed and range. If you are a Linux user, the drivers are most likely not included with your distribution. The drivers are easy to install and work well, but the brief guide doesn't say you have to go to GitHub to get them. If you're a Linux user, you'll also need to know a little bit about the terminal to install the drivers. The included quick start guide is also terrible. It explains how to install drivers in Windows XP. I suspect most people buy this to use with Linux or Windows 10. It's a little surprising that their quick start instructions are so out of touch with reality. In addition, it uses blue LEDs. I don't like blue LEDs because they can disturb sleep. This adapter is not for everyone. But it's a good choice if 1) you're a computer pro or power user. Or 2) you need its range or speed and don't care about its size. Or 3) You're a Linux user looking for something high quality and you don't mind using the terminal a bit to install drivers. If you are the right customer then you will love this wifi. Adapter.
