Great Charger: Battery Chargers

I have a 1.5A Schumacher charger that I have used to charge and service various batteries. When I looked at the user manual it said that you shouldn't use it to charge large (car) batteries and if you do it can reduce its capacity. I've searched the internet to better understand why this might be the case. I've found that charging at a slow current of 1.5A shouldn't hurt the battery even if it's deeply discharged, so I still don't see why they don't recommend it. During my research, I learned that these multi-stage "smart" chargers exist, and not only can they charge any battery, but they do it better in so many ways. 4-stage adds desulfation. Desulphation uses short pulses of higher than normal voltage to dissolve the lead sulphate and remove these deposits that affect battery performance. This extends battery life and can even bring a dead battery back to life, but never at full 100% capacity. Then they have 7 speed or even 9 speed chargers depending on what you might call it. Phase,โ€ which adds a few extra steps that aren't strictly necessary, but can help extend the life of the battery, or at least charge it with the least amount of degradation normally associated with a charge cycle. All of this is made possible by an embedded microprocessor programmed to use different charging parameters with different voltages, fixed or AC, in each phase and to dynamically adjust these parameters as the charging progresses. While these computer controlled battery charging features never existed before, they are now standard and absolutely necessary if you want to charge your battery with the least amount of wear or damage. And as for 4-speed, 7-speed or 9-speed, I don't think it matters that much, so I wouldn't pay attention to the number of levels offered in the charger. I have found many expensive and cheap chargers at Revain, but which one should I choose? I think a good brand will produce a better quality charger, but there are also generic Chinese brands that vary in quality. I think it's worth a try if you can get a decent charger for $35 instead of $90. Chargers are expensive because of the high current transistors and capacitors they contain, but also because of the "features". I don't know if it makes a difference how they're programmed as I couldn't find any reviews that look closely at their loading algorithms. I think in general lead-acid battery charging is understandable, so I have no doubt that the algorithms are good. The cheaper Chinese chargers with weird sounding names are from Aimtom. The best I could find in terms of performance and price. (Aimtom? Are we aiming for a guy named Tom?) It puts out 4A, which is said to be enough to charge any battery, and while 8A or 12A will charge it faster, it doesn't matter if you leave it charging overnight . so $a is a lot. Then there are 30A chargers that really charge the battery "too fastโ€ and are only suitable for professionals for whom time is money. Aimtom has another, more expensive one that is 7.2A with similar features and I saw no reason to spend more just to get a higher current. In addition, it has AGM-specific functions. It charges SLA and AGM a little differently, which I think is a good thing, especially when it comes to desulphating and recharging a deeply discharged, old, or damaged battery. Then it can charge a 12V lithium battery. Since I get one like this for my camper trailer, this is a great feature! Lithium charges very differently than a lead-acid battery and using a lead-acid charging profile for these batteries is not recommended because lithium does not have a "float" or maintenance mode, uses slightly different voltages and exists without sulphation. These great features usually cost upwards of $80, but this charger excels at offering these great features at an amazing price. But how does it work? How good can you tell but I like the display that shows voltage and current as well as 5 step progress. It has 2 buttons that don't "click" when you press them, which is weird, but they work. The orange color is pleasant. It comes with good quality connectors, an extra "ring" connector that I put in my car all the time for easy charging during maintenance. Only thing missing is a tote bag. Other Chinese chargers came with a decent hard case, which is handy for keeping everything together. I think I'll buy a custom hard case for this or maybe just keep the original box which is compact and easy to pack/unpack. At the moment I'm using it to fully charge a new H9 AGM battery. Bought for my Tuareg. It started at 12.8v and took a few hours to get to max. I will also use it to charge if I don't drive for more than a week. I also charge it once a year. I expect this battery to last 7-10 YEARS like the 7 year old AGM battery it replaced. Overall I am very happy with this charger. Thank you Rewin!
