Review on πŸ”§ Dowel Jig with Offset Scriber Line System: Perfect Woodworking Tool for Accurate Straight Hole Locating, Drill, and Marking with Self-Centering Scriber Line & Wood Dowels Pins by Josh Chenier

Not as useful as I had hoped

This design seems to have a basic limitation of how close to the end of the board you can use it and still have the self centering action workable. During testing, I found that there was just over an inch from the end of the board to the first hole. I also found it quite difficult to tell exactly where the drill line will be when the tool is over the workpiece. Finally, the supplied full center marks are slightly larger and don't fit Dell's drill holes due to a lack of an exact match. On the other hand, the provided beach towels seem to be of pretty good quality. All in all, I find it only partially useful as an addition to my repertoire of woodworking tricks. I don't use Dell extensively as I tend to either use cookies for some applications or traditional joinery for others. There are also pocket screws and Domino's have alternatives on the market today. You can look at the photo I took to get an idea of what the holes looked like when I placed them as close to the end of the board as possible. Also, there were no instructions included with the kit and I think that's because it's clearly a production clone of someone else's design.

Pros
  • Annual trial period
Cons
  • The list would be long.
