Great product but not very tasty

First of all, I love Legion products. They are by far my favorite supplement company and offer the most transparency of any of their competitors. Plus, the company's founder, Michael Matthews, is pretty darn cool. I cannot recommend his books and overall training philosophy highly enough. (Oh yes, his books; start with Bigger, Leaner, Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Perfect Male Body if you're a man, or Thinner, Leaner, Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Perfect Female Body if you're a man (man again. Great books on fitness, health and positive living philosophy.) Now that we've wrapped up that whirlwind introduction, let's talk Whey+ Here's a very brief version of my review: As a product, this is one one of the best protein supplements you can buy. However, the taste leaves a lot to be desired and to be honest I almost can't drink it. Let's talk about the positives of Whey+ first, because they are varied and plentiful. Whey+ is a protein *isolate* that is rarer and more valuable than protein *concentrate* If you've been drinking protein drinks for a while and haven't been very careful about what you eat, S ie probably drunk protein concentrates. I'm not attempting to write a dissertation on the different forms of protein available, but suffice it to say that the protein isolate found in Legion's Whey+ is superior to the protein concentrate. With any 'pure protein' drink, we usually want as few carbs and fat as possible, so isolate is a much better (and more expensive) choice. Legion contains an amazing 2 grams of carbohydrates and 0 grams of fat per 22 grams of protein. You almost couldn't ask for a better ratio (although, as you'll see below, at least one other company manages to get the job done). In terms of what Legion Whey+ promises and then delivers, it leads the industry. Whey+ is a premium protein supplement with no added harmful substances. It's this almost absurdly high quality that gives them 4 stars instead of 3. And I'm leaning towards 3 because... flavor. Oh taste. I've only tried vanilla so can't speak for other flavors, but yes. The powder has an overall "vanilla" flavor but is packed with the medicinal-chemical taste so characteristic of artificial sweeteners. I've mixed it with fruit and flaxseed and it still leaves an aftertaste. (For the record, I use a bullet blender and either water or coconut/almond milk.) It's worth noting that I tend to rebel against flavored protein drinks in general, so if the powder is flavored it's bloody better. **Perfect* *. What do I mean by "rebel"? OK, here's my problem. For me, this protein drink is a pure win. I need a very large amount of protein per day, an amount that is impractical on whole foods. So I supplement my diet with concentrated protein to increase my protein intake without consuming a lot of unwanted carbs or fats. Also, I think it's safe to assume that *everyone* using the powder in this way is using it for the same reason, which means that anyone buying a product like Whey+ is actively eating a very healthy diet and monitoring closely what he eats, ie , no junk food. Then why do dietary supplements insist on making cookie-and-cream-like flavors? Advocaat? Chocolate Peanut Butter? Frapacino chewing gum? Okay, I made that last one up, but admit it; You believed it for a second. In my quest for fitness, I've given up things like cookies and eggnog, and some researchers have made strong arguments that continued consumption of even "healthy" snacks with unnaturally high sweetness supports sugar cravings, which many of us would have liked to eradicate . I understand that not everyone thinks that way, and that's okay; I only mentioned this to give context as to why I can critique the taste of this product so much (and perhaps suggest a possible reason why some people can't put junk food in the past). Personally, when I'm heavily focused on my health, I just don't feel like eating a decadent, boutique-flavored "healthy" snack. I want usefulness, purity and naturalness. rant. At least it's true that Whey+ comes unflavored (which I missed on my first order) and I'd love to try that next time. In the meantime, here are some other unflavored proteins that I recommend. Whey Protein Isolate Powder: PROMIX Standard 100% Natural Grass, Fattened & Undenatured Best for Optimum Fitness Nutritious Shakes & Energy Smoothie Bowls: Unflavored 5lb Bulk Roughly on par with Legion in terms of quality, and they actually manage 30g of that protein per 2g of carbs, which is superior to the Whey+ ratio (again, Whey+ is 22g/2g). Promix protein is slightly cheaper than Legion, but hey; they are both very expensive. If you're buying protein of this quality then, like me, you probably don't care about cost. In terms of cost, however, you're better off buying a Β£5 container, but remember this is essentially a barrel-sized stockpile of bomb shelters. This is a **HUGE** Protein 17 - Organic Grass-Fed Whey Protein, Delicious Natural Flavor, 1lb/16oz/454g - Another unflavored protein that I like (although it's a concentrate and not an isolate). Protein 17 highlights the quality of their cows, specifically that all cows are 100% free range and grass-fed (Whey+ and Promix cows are also grass-fed), while Protein 17 notes that their protein is 100% % is organic, in other words, non-GMO. . To be fair, both Promix and Whey+ claim their products are non-GMO, although neither uses the word "organic." One final note on Protein 17: It's actually **much** more expensive than Promix or Whey+, and even *twice* the price. Protein 17 costs $37 per pound, meaning 5 pounds of Protein 17 will set you back $185, as opposed to $90 Promix or Whey+. However, Protein 17 blends really well, and while it lacks flavor, it has a delicious creamy texture that others don't have. If I only drank one shake a day, I might go for Protein 17. However, since I usually take about three a day, I've switched to Promix, although I'll definitely try Legion Whey+ without the flavor simply because I'm such a fan of Legion products. I wish you all the best in your quest for better health and I hope this review has helped enlighten you in some way!
