The shoes are great for hiking! My four year old daughter is a size 9 (regular) and we could get her, but we have a 9.5 to give her room to wiggle her toes and grow her legs. She felt safe climbing rocks, trees, and any terrain. I just don't know if they are waterproof. An important note, the shoes are not very flexible (of course for hiking shoes). It is very durable and tight to put on! My daughter can't put these shoes on herself and was quite determined. Therefore, you will most likely need adult help. However, after applying, my daughter's feet were fine and still felt great after a 4 hour hike.
