Review on ⚡ 30 Amp RV Surge Protector with Integrated Surge Protection and Circuit Analyzer - Adapter and Wiring for RV Trailers - Male to Female - Indicator Lights by Jonathan Lloyd

MELTS! IT'S NOT JUST GARBAGE, IT'S DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE CHECKED!

I previously rated this product 3 stars due to the lack of a surge protection label. We've just got back from a trip and the HULL MELTED (and had an electrical failure) so we're on the same star now (actually I'd put negative stars but I can't). As an electrical engineer, I know that every electrical system consists of several parts. So the question is, how do I know it's a bug spot and not something else? In this case, the answer is quite simple - this device was plugged into a utility pole at a Washington DC RV park with a 30 amp circuit breaker - and the circuit breaker did not trip. My camper has the camper master switch, which is also rated for 30 amps - it didn't burn out either. Since this line was protected both before and after the Camco 55310 adapter, but the adapter still melted, something is wrong in the adapter. Before turning on the switch on the RV pole, the analyzer showed two yellow lights (indicating that the power supply is OK). The utility pole itself seemed to be in better shape than most RV parks, which I expected from a state park that has more stringent inspections than most RV parks. The water heater was also running on electricity - that was all that worked at the time my power went out - well within the 30 amp rating of this unit (as evidenced by two circuit breakers plus the math giving me less than 30 amps) . I own this device every 4 months but the return period has expired so I haven't had any luck getting my money back. So. WARNING - THIS ITEM NOT ONLY DOESN'T WORK, IT IS DANGEROUS - MELTING THE CASE AND EXPOSING HIGH CURRENT WIRING INSIDE WITHOUT ANY REASON TO TURN THE SWITCH OFF OR DISABLE IT BY EXCESSIVE HEAT! After this issue, I unplugged the 55310 adapter and plugged the RV power cord directly into the pole without that "guard" and everything worked fine. CAMCO should be ashamed of making this product. My first review follows, but I'm only leaving it here if you'd like to know more about my concerns about this item. However, what I described above is so bad that you really should avoid this product altogether! The product list specifically states "Built-in surge protection: up to 1050 joules". But it doesn't say anything about surge suppression anywhere on the product, and it didn't come with a piece of paper or instructions, and it didn't come in a Camco box, so I wasn't sure if it actually had surge suppression. So I just checked out Camco's website and they say they also have a surge suppressor so I'll take their word for it (this is the first surge suppressor I've owned that says nothing about the surge suppression value of the product itself).

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
