Review on πŸ“Ί Winegard Elite Outdoor HDTV Antenna – 70 Mile Range for VHF and UHF Channels by Prince Burr

Sad piece of plastic

I live in Northwest Florida (Pensacola) and installed my first antenna 18 years ago. Over the years I have installed three different types of 20 foot outdoor antennas on an antenna mast. All of them were disappointing as they received digital wireless especially when the station was using the old VHF which my local Fox and one independent still use. So one day I decided to call the station. An engineer at my local radio station whose tower is 54 miles west of me. Luckily this man lived 5 miles south of me. Then he informed me that the only outside antenna he found received all stations. There is a Winegard Flatwave "FL6550A" in our area including VHF that advertises a range of over 60 miles so I bought it and installed it and to my surprise I got 37 clear channels including VHF. It was 5 years ago. In short, when I saw Winegard introduce the Winegard Elite, I knew I needed one to connect even more stations. My plan was to use a splitter and send Old Flatwave east so I could receive 4 stations in that direction. So the old flatwave has come down and the new elite has risen. Then I went in, scanned the channels, looked and saw that I only had 19 stations and NO VHF stations, although I used my compass to point Elite in the right direction for all the broadcast towers that were west of me at the time went outside and did some fine tuning and did a rescan and that was the worst. I decided to install my old Flatwave to see if I had a bad connection. I did and returned to 37 stations including VHF. I would like to add that the installation and completion of this so called elite antenna is a joke as Winegard charges for it. You might think it would be sturdier, but when I opened the box and saw that it was 95% cheap plastic, I knew it wouldn't last 2 years in the sun and high winds here in Florida. In fact, the screws it contains are "self-tapping" Corse threads that cut into the plastic as you screw them in. So if you tighten them just a little too much your toast will pop out as the plastic hole pops out.

Cons
  • High price
