Let me start by saying this is a fantastic product. I was surprised to get something this good for the price. Now let me say that your Gorget story is wrong. This has nothing to do with the American Civil War. All this is related to the colonial era. This item will not protect your neck if you are under 5 years old. The necklace of the period represented by this piece was reduced in size and purely decorative. They were worn by officers of the French and British armies, as well as by Prussian mercenaries and Indian leaders. A cast of this quality (very slight imperfections around the holes) would have been given to the Indians. It may be either French or British-Indian trade, but for military use by whites it is more in the French style.
