Batteries overheat

Overall not the quality I was hoping for. I put 3 AAA batteries in as a backup and after 3 minutes I felt heat coming from the bottom of the clock. I opened the battery compartment and felt for the batteries, they felt so hot I had to knock them out and drop them on the floor. I can't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't felt the heat and just walked out of the room.
