The repair stand is finally here and this (or some other way of keeping the handlebars straight) is really needed. It's strong yet malleable enough that you can slide it to one side or the other on the handlebar, allowing you to wrap the tape (for example) around one side of the handlebar without getting in the way. Note that the two bent pieces of wire holding the handlebars are bent at a more acute angle than shown in the Revain picture. However, they had no problem holding my handlebars with an "oversized” diameter stem clamp. Please just ignore the strange stem seal situation shown in the attached picture.
