Pretty damn good - waffle maker

I love weekend Belgian waffles and bought these to replace the Waring that melted. I loved the Waring in many ways, but I've had 2 fail in exactly the same way (most of the unit is metal except for the plastic parts it pivots on and it's prone to catastrophic meltdowns), so I decided to try my luck with another brand. Haven't had it long enough to see how it holds up over time. But straight out of the box, impressions and the first few uses look promising. It's a bit more compact in terms of the countertop space it occupies. So if you leave it on the table and you have a small kitchen, that could be a plus. The design is mostly metal, although there are some plastic parts. It seems less likely to share the same Achilles heel design flaw as the Waring since most of the parts that are in the hot zone are metal. Works well, waffles don't stick or burn. I'm not sure the "Done" indicator is that accurate, so I usually do a visual check after a few minutes and get a feel for how long a particular setting actually takes. In my case, I only do one or two at a time, so it's not hard to do it "with the Force". If I were doing something for a large group of people, I would switch to the more precise sciences and pick a time that I liked and then use a kitchen timer. But I wouldn't rely on the built-in backlight except as a very rough guide. The only thing I don't like about this guy is the depth of the pockets. I'm not sure how to measure the height of the waffle exactly, but the thickest part of the waffle's height on my old Waring machine seemed to be about 7/8 inch or so. Hamilton Beach makes waffles a little thinner. Maybe 1/2 inch or 5 max / 8 inches at the thickest point. Doesn't sound like much and tastes great, but as far as serving goes, they look a little less luxurious. When ordering and comparing waffles at a restaurant, thicker waffles definitely have a premium gourmet look. The thinner ones that HB makes look a little more like "bargain breakfast counters" at first glance. Like I said, they taste great, just less appealing. Still, they're thick enough to qualify as Belgian waffles, but not thin enough, in my opinion, to look like cheap frozen waffles that you toss in a toaster, or anything else that's frustrating. Installation is easy to use and clean.I hope it lasts better than my experience with other brands. If it lasts then the price is right and it will be good value for money.

Pros

Cons
  • too stupid
