Review on πŸ’» Microsoft Surface Studio 1st Generation - i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB Storage by Sangmin Barrett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

great screen. Good enough to draw. Slow hard drive.

Very powerful unique computer. With a large, clear screen and a fairly accurate stylus, the drawing process is just great. Unfortunately, the built-in hard drive is very slow, but this can easily be remedied by installing an SSD. Pen Accuracy: Surface Studio 1 has an issue with pen wobble. When you try to draw a drawing, your lines will be blurry even if you use a ruler. This jitter is visible when drawing at normal speed. You MUST enable software anti-aliasing to eliminate stuttering (Clip Studio has better software anti-aliasing). The downside is that there is pen lag that makes it difficult to create detailed lines. I currently prefer to do all my line work on my iPad Pro - the Apple Pencil has zero latency and zero jitter. However, the Surface Studio is much better suited to digital painting due to the large screen and fairly accurate stylus. If you're not working in real time, you won't notice the stylus shaking. Slow Hard Drive: An hour after I booted the computer for the first time, the entire system crashed and hung. Disk usage stayed at 100% for hours and I had to reboot my computer to thaw everything. The next day I replaced the 2TB drive with an SSD from my old laptop. Now everything is going very fast. Installing the SSD and reinstalling Windows takes about 3 hours. The online instructions are very good. Google "cesardelatorre surface studio ssd".
