Pleasant but awful smell

Update: I applied cedarwood essential oil to the lid, then several coats of polyacrylic. Finally got rid of the smell. (Things that didn't work: airing, soap and water, baking soda and/or vinegar). It holds exactly 1 5 pound sack of flour. Smells awful. I was able to get the smell out of the jar with a simple hand wash, but with the lid it's a different story. I had to soak the gasket in vinegar for hours. I don't know how to get the smell out of the wooden lid. If I can't figure it out, I'll have to send it back.
