Many other reviewers have noted how different even five piece sets can be and they were right. After sanding them all, some soaked up the paint like a sponge, others I had to do multiple passes to get the same result. I wouldn't recommend painting directly onto surfaces with this if you plan on making a set. Not suitable for this. I'm deducting a star for that alone. This is not the only reason why this should be advertised as an alternative to canvas. However, I used it for a completely different job. I needed small shelves 9" to 10" wide for a very, very strange part of my house with little traffic. The equivalent amount of plywood, custom carved, or other crafted wood would cost a lot more money. Here I painted these panels just to hide the imperfections (most of them at least). And the 5/8" deep, 7/8" wide frame was more than enough for some Elfa melamine shelves. They are solid and thanks to the frame I know they will do the job and will probably last a while. I'm excited.
