Review on Whetstone Sharpening Yushoo Waterstone Flattening by Robert Long

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good set for a beginner (me) at a great price

Sharpening Stone Set, Yushoo Premium: $15.21 at time of purchase. I've wanted to sharpen my kitchen knives for a long time. currently. My wife and I got a nice set of Henckle knives when we got married years ago and we still have them. Unfortunately, knives get dull, and like I said, they're *long* obsolete. Read on to find out why I think this is a good stone for beginners like me and a great stone for long-term use. The packaging of the Yushoo whetstone set is a white box with the brand name on it. It's not fashionable, but it protects the set well. If this was intended as a gift, it's not the prettiest packaging. I've watched a few videos on YouTube in preparation for using this stone, but I've never used a knife sharpener like this one. Therefore, considering how effective this stone is, I take into account that I am a beginner. I tried my best to use a constant weight and angle as suggested in the video. I used a marker to mark the edge of the blade so I know if I'm making progress. And the result is a sharper knife! But... it wasn't a crazy papercut animal. I started with a cheap santoku knife (didn't want to practice on one of my henckles) that was nearly 20 years old and never sharpened. I was literally dumb as a butter knife. According to the instructions, I first soaked the stone for 20 minutes. During the soak, I determined the correct pressure using a digital kitchen scale. The end result after about 5-7 minutes of sharpening practice was a slightly sharper knife. I've successfully removed the marker so I know the edge has been modified. But I also know that I still need a lot of practice. I look forward to honing my craft (heh) over the coming months. However, I would like to point out one annoying thing. There is a "non-slip" layer under the bamboo holder that prevents it from moving during the grinding process. It was practically useless. I had to use a weighted towel to keep the bamboo still. -------------*Good Quality*: Double-sided sharpening stone. Excellent price. *Bad Side*: Moves during use if you can't find a way to secure it. * Conclusion: * I'm glad I ordered this stone. It is a great tool for practicing both medium grit (1000) for edging and fine grit (6000) for polishing/finishing. And at around $15, you can't go wrong. Five stars out of five for excellent value for money. I would order this again.
