Review on Secure Data Storage Solution: Apricorn 1TB Aegis Padlock USB 3.0 256-bit AES XTS Hardware Encrypted Portable External Hard Drive by Jacob Andreti

Practical solution

I've used several Apricorn Aegis drives at work and decided to try one for personal use. The case is rigid and does not appear to be easily damaged. The transfer speed is good considering there is a hard drive inside. The cable could be longer, but it's nice to be able to clip it around the device and not have to carry around a separate cable if you don't want to. The only thing I usually have to do on most modern computers I've used it on is adjust the power saving settings on the USB port it's plugged into. Most commonly, the power connector went into sleep mode during many hours of transfer, which automatically locked the drive. While this is a good security feature, and as it should be, since it thinks you've removed the drive, it can be frustrating to come back a few hours later and think the transfer should be complete, but it only went 5 -10% before it ran out. After adjusting the energy saving options, the problem did not occur again. These drives are great and I recommend them to anyone who needs a good hardware encrypted drive that doesn't use any software executable files on the computer to unlock your drive.

Pros
  • Ultra-fast USB 3.0 connection - transfer speeds up to 10x faster than USB 2.0
Cons
  • Big and chunky
