No suction required. There is a hook on the back and if you turn the handle clockwise it will come close to the jig that attaches the hook to the back of the vent. I had other vent clips and my phone kept falling off of them. But the hook keeps it safe. You can also tilt your device so your phone is in the most comfortable position for you. I like the simple button to release the phone. You hold it as far as you want to release the phone and squeeze the sides to press it against the phone. It works very well with my Samsung S9.
