My son just started skating and we had a bad time renting skates. They often didn't lace all the way through and just didn't fit him. The rink sold them in a more "girly" color scheme, but I liked how childish and sporty they looked, so I bought the green and gray ones here. Doesn't matter! The ankle padding is padded and a Velcro ankle strap provides a secure fit. The laces are also more than long enough to tie securely and untie easily. Overall they seem to support his ankles better and he says they feel better on his feet. He can walk in it much easier when he's not on the ice. I bought his shoes a regular size as others have suggested and they were perfect. In addition, they had to be sharpened immediately after unpacking. If your child is in elementary school, this is definitely worth considering. As soon as my son stopped using the rent, it was like night and day.
