The blades are definitely not metal. There was some confusion in some of the answers to this. There is no mention of sealant in the instructions, Gates websites do not provide specific information on how to use sealant, but their general information clearly states that sealant cannot be used. So I didn't use anything. But it's nothing short of a miracle that the gasket appears to have shrunk, for with no sealant to hold the gasket in place during installation (thanks to the Dodge engineers for not adding that extra 1mm required clearance ), the seal wants to fall out .out of the channel. . I didn't want to lower the engine so I fought it and it turned out to land where it was supposed to. So make your own decision about using sealant to hold it in place during installation.
