Works almost as advertised, but.

This Salad-O-Matic is an interesting concept that works almost as advertised. It's basically one of those large white bowl-shaped cutting boards for use with the included curved knife, similar to the type used by the Inuit (Eskimos) - the Ulu knife. You basically put all your veggies and salads in a bowl and cut them with a curved knife, moving it back and forth along the curved bottom of the bowl. You conceptually end up with all of your food in the same bite-sized chunks you find at restaurants with sliced lettuce. Plus, you have one less item to wash because you don't have to use a separate cutting board. However, the knife is blunt and cuts food more firmly than cleanly. It occurred to me that maybe this was done on purpose so you wouldn't ruin your bowl anytime soon, with all those fine lines that show up on cutting boards over time (and which can harbor bacteria). In my salad picture, I ended up taking out my veggies and just ran most of them through a food processor/grater because the oscillating knife wasn't (literally) cutting them. Maybe romaine lettuce or butter will do, or sharpen a knife. I tried using the knife just on a hard plate of scallions and it's hard to see, but it crushed them (required a lot of pressure) like it originally did with my cabbage in the bowl. The advertisement for this dish features spinach, egg, bacon, pickles, onions, and pepper salad. These foods should actually chop/grind just fine with that dull knife. So if you stick to certain ingredients, this might work for you. The bowl itself is large and deep, strong yet light - very good for salads. Since I like my bowl very much, I give it 3 stars. I don't think I want cuts on the inside, this is a sharper working knife! I know it defeats the purpose of this article, but the Salad-O-Matic bowl chopping board was a little disappointing. When I think about it, I also think that I don't want to eat off the cutting board like I eat on a plate.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
