Well I'm not a machinist, machinist or user of metal turners so I have nothing to compare them to. They're sharp as hell and packed in a thick plastic bag along with plenty of protective motor oil. I don't know if they are harder or softer than branded versions. I bought these because I realized they could make great igniters for the ferro rod used by bushcrafters and outdoor people to start fires. So far everything is fine in this regard, but not great. I find that end angles less than 90° work best for firing, although most Ferrod users generally like the 90° end. I'm not sure if this is indicative of the quality of the carbon steel they are made of or not. Probably no. Generally they are sufficient for my purpose if I tie them with twine to protect my fingers from getting cut by the edges when using them to ignite the ferro rod.
