I needed a block to level my Japanese waterstones and can't afford a diamond blade. This stone came flat (a key requirement not all stones meet for alignment - read competitor reviews). Cooking Obsession was tested with a 1500 grit Shapton KUROMAKU stone by drawing a mesh onto the Shapton stone and then rubbing it against the Cooking Obsession. Stone under a gentle stream of tap water. Shapton's stone was restored to a flat state within minutes. Please note that Shapton's KUROMAKU waterstones are made of a harder material than many waterstones. When I used Culinary Obsession to smooth out softer waterstones (800/3000 grit on both sides), the process took very little time to achieve the desired flatness. I am very happy with this leveling stone. The leveling stone is a decent size, by the way, slightly larger than my waterstones - a nice feature of a lapping plate or leveling stone. Please note that everything is fine with the leather belt. I had a problem with green polishing paste. I wasn't able to apply an even coat of compound to the lines. Maybe the mixture needed to be softened or something. The instructions state that the mixture should be rubbed into the skin like a pencil. However, the connection will not cooperate. Since I don't usually sharpen my knives and bought the kit mainly for the leveling stone, there is no star for this rating.
