First, the knife is a good weight and very sharp. The blade is beautiful, with a beautiful damask pattern. However, it seems to me that the pattern is laser engraved and not real damask. Maybe that's the San Mai technique. If so, then it should be in the description. I say that because the Damascus blade pattern is the same on the blade, ricasso and tang. In this case, the damask ends about 1 inch short of the handle. To say this is a poor quality blade would be a lie as I have not used it at all. I sent it back because it didn't meet my expectations for damascus steel. I bought A1, not A2. A2 looks like a base in San Mai but I'm not sure. A1 definitely not.
