Worked but didn't do what I was hoping it would (USB adapter)

I was hoping this would allow me to connect an external USB drive so I could transfer files back and forth to my phone more easily can. Well, the phone saw the flash drive, but the phone didn't know what to do with it. I've tried just plugging this into another computer to test the adapter and it's fine. So it works exactly as intended, but not in the way I was hoping (and it's my fault).
