Review on CalDigit Storage External Drive Enclosure by Craig Kimball

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Not Thunderbolt 2 but a decent USB 3.1 hub/chassis

When I first bought this I was upset and considered returning it. I thought this would be a great Thunderbolt 2 hub for my 2014 iMac. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and installing software from the manufacturer's website (at least on 10.13 High Sierra) results in the hard drive not being recognized by the computer. A lot of anxiety ensued as I reformatted and reinstalled the operating system on the hard drive, a Crucial SSD. I sat in my burlap and ashes thinking I'd only use it for what it can do - as an outer case for a 3.1 external drive/center. To my great surprise, the speeds were more than adequate. Then I connected two more USB 3.1. The devices in the hub are the Blu-ray drive and my hard drive, and they've worked flawlessly so far. (I've been using this setup for several months). Since then I've had an instance or two of the hard drive enclosure going offline, but that was extremely rare. While not what is advertised, it is a solid USB 3.1 external enclosure/hub. Other Pros: It looks great and has a locking mechanism to secure the drive. Other Cons: It's a bit difficult to fully insert the disc tray. You have to use some force and it may close before it's fully inserted. If the disc won't boot, check that first.
