Even if you use pine litter like me others are right that you want to save the screen layer for cleaning which means you save it in the middle until you want to use it. It is useless to keep it on top, since there is no space between the bottom of the sieve and the next layer for the urine-soaked sawdust to fall through and stay alive. It's still not easy to sift one at a time in existing bowls, so I ended up keeping my old, very tall bowl as a sawdust trap. Minor inconveniences aside, now I only use the shovel to pick up poop every day and I only have to sift the pine litter every 2 or 3 days and it splits fast! I can't put the whole pine in and sift it all at once, but I can cut in half, sift, put into a clean tray, put the other half in, sift, put in a clean pan, then put in the sawdust and I'll do about that long be ready as it took me to print this manual! Win. Note: Stone pine bed linen turns into stone once you get used to it! I haven't even smelled urine (or chemical perfume) since the switch :)
