Learn how to properly tin a new or rusty tip!

I have a junkyard full of soldering irons and pencil-shaped butane torches, including a horribly chunky pistol-grip monster that looks like a Colt 45 automatic pistol from the '60s. I've struggled for years to solder consistently, from electronics to heavier brass designs. I am currently soldering 16G wire. I decided to switch to this device. I was happy with the overall combination of iron and holder, soldering coil, cleaning wool, multiple tips, and temperature control. Good place to work. The soldering quality was normal when shipped, but deteriorated with use. I went back to basics and dived into the YouTube rabbit hole in soldering techniques. I've covered the basics of pure metal, flux, with helping hands (the need for love/hate). Eureka/Epiphany was an old hand who noticed the important technique of tinning a new or rusted old tip. With a properly tinned tip, you can load the tip with a dab of solder and then apply it to the joint, counting a few seconds while the joint heats up and the solder continues to flow. With this handy workstation and the right methods, I was reborn. The tinning process should be repeated one to two hours after use. With a little patience and obsessive attention, the soldering process becomes stress-free and even.
