This lens is literally several times lighter than my Tamron 17-50/2.8 and weighs less than the 50/1.4. The SAM motor is definitely not as fast and quiet as the USM/SSM based lens. However, this lens also weighs next to nothing. Three A77 batteries would weigh more than this lens if that gives you any idea of how light this lens is. I took some test shots after receiving the lens in the mail. The quality of the image going through the lens is good. Very clear and works well in normal indoor night lighting as expected from a 2.8 lens. This is definitely an excellent moderate telephoto prime lens for its weight. However, focusing can be hunted in low light. There's no focus limiter either, so autofocus can take a while given the range.
