Like but prefer others

I liked the lens, very much and if you don't have a 50mm lens this would definitely be a great option. I personally prefer the 50mm 1.4 lens over this lens, however it doubles the cost. So factor in the cost and necessity, and it definitely gives you a little more distance to the subject than the 50mm lens. Either way, this lens is a good, and for most people, a great addition to your Sony lens arsenal.

Ideal for beginner portrait photographers.

Yes, this lens REALLY lived up to my expectations. I bought it to introduce photographic portrait photography, which I knew next to nothing about. And I was looking for an inexpensive way to gain the necessary practical experience. This lens is affordable and known for its good performance. I am satisfied with the performance of this lens. And I can recommend it as a simple, reliable and well-functioning tool for beginners in portrait photography. So YES, I would RECOMMEND this lens to a friend

Lightweight portrait/head lens.

This lens is literally several times lighter than my Tamron 17-50/2.8 and weighs less than the 50/1.4. The SAM motor is definitely not as fast and quiet as the USM/SSM based lens. However, this lens also weighs next to nothing. Three A77 batteries would weigh more than this lens if that gives you any idea of how light this lens is. I took some test shots after receiving the lens in the mail. The quality of the image going through the lens is good. Very clear and works well in normal indoor…

I like it.: Lenses

I bought this lens used but it was in good condition. It focuses fairly quickly, much faster than a telephoto lens. But that's what you expect from a prime lens. Boca is good, but it would be much better if it had a larger aperture. However, f/2.8 is suitable for portrait photography. I usually use 50mm for portraits at f/1.4. However, I've heard again and again that the 85mm is great for portraits. But I had no intention of spending my money on a ridiculously expensive one. I think this lens…

SUPER ADVANTAGES. GET THIS LENS!

I read all the reviews then I went and bought Sony 35mm and 85mm lenses (SAM). Yes, they are cheap Chinese plastic and might not be on my list of things to do with my kids. Doesn't matter? The optics are excellent, the focusing is fast enough and the images are very sharp and rich in contrast. In my life I have had Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon, full frame Canon, Lumix (4:3), Linhof Technicas. . . .The list goes on. None of them can match the performance of this cheap lens. I'm also happy with the…
