Review on Cable Matters 2-in-1 VR Extension Cable πŸ”Œ (Black, 5m/16.4 Feet) - DisplayPort and USB Extension Cable by Andrew Cramer

I REALLY wanted to love it, but.

There are many reasons to extend the reach of your VR headset, but VR itself makes it difficult to do so to reach. A simple extension cord won't work, the signal doesn't have enough power to go the distance. Active power cables are required but can be expensive. I really wanted to like it. For me with an Oculus Rift S and previous issues with limited headroom, this expansion makes a lot of sense. The package arrived quickly and it's pretty easy. You've taped together an "active" DisplayPort cable (more on that later) and an active USB 3.0 cable, both sold separately. The USB cable can be used as-is or powered by the MicroB to USB power connector. I ended up doing just that, plugging the Anker Powerline MicroB to USB-A cable I had into an extension cord (with USB Type-A connectors). The DisplayPort cable is intended to be powered from the DisplayPort connector on your GPU itself. I tried it with the cable connected and didn't roll the dice. While the active USB 3.0 cable worked fine (with Oculus recognizing headset data just fine), DisplayPort didn't connect. No fiddling with the cable changed that. It wasn't until I connected the headset's DisplayPort cable directly to my GPU that it was recognized. Maybe my GPU (GTX 970) is some kind of limit for VR, but I don't think it is. I bet that like the normal unpowered extension, the DisplayPort signal was too weak for the headset to work. I wholeheartedly recommend the separate active USB 3.0 cable that CableMatters sells, and if they release a version of that with a true active-powered DisplayPort cable, I'd give it another try. In the meantime, don't waste your money on this package. Get your active USB 3.0 extension and use a different video solution.

Pros
  • Integrated USB extender supports VR headset USB 3.0 cable for headset audio and controller tracking; The USB cable extender is equipped with active chipset to boost USB signal, prevent audio glitches, VR controller or motion tracking issues and disconnects; Optional microB power connector supports USB data transfer to PCs with low-power USB ports
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other options
