Buy a bigger drill press.
Neither my 14.4v cordless drill nor my 120v 3/8" drill could drive them more than halfway into southern pine. I ended up drilling the pilot holes and using a ratchet to finish them off which made me feel like I was back in the tie rod business. If you're a typical DIYer, chances are your equipment isn't up to scratch. Remember, size matters and the pros have bigger tools than the rest!
