A workhorse with a serious problem that Canon doesn't solve

This is a five star scanner as long as it works, but when it fails Canon doesn't do anything to solve the problem and becomes a one-star scanner after that. I bought my first DR-G1100 in January 2014 and it was a lemon. The Canon Authorized Service Center couldn't fix it so I returned it and bought a second unit. After that I had a five star experience for several months until one day the included software (Capture Perfect 3.1) reported an out of memory issue. The scanner works fine with another computer and the computer works fine with another Canon scanner running the same software (I have three high speed Canon sheetfed scanners). Reinstalling the driver and software did not help. Calls to Canon support went unanswered and there was no real hope of an answer so I solved the problem with a new computer and scanner. After a few months, the scanner stopped working with the new computer. Same symptoms as before: Out of memory error. Of course I checked the memory. The scanner works with another (third) computer and my other Canon scanners work with either computer. This time I uninstalled the scanning application and drivers, upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, reinstalled the driver and software, but the problem was not resolved. I've speculated with two different Canon support people that something might be corrupt in the registry. The representatives took detailed notes and promised to contact me, but none of them answered. So I continue to use the scanner, now with a third computer. Buying a new computer every few months to use this scanner would be a practice that would not be acceptable to me if I had an alternative. Canon doesn't seem to care.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
