Review on πŸ’Ύ Superior Dual Bay RAID USB-C External Drive Enclosure: Introducing MiniPro RAID V3 by Talapon Blackburn

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well on a MacBook with USB 3.1

I needed a portable storage drive that was larger than the current 5TB max capacity. This little RAID enclosure did it. It's a little bigger than I was hoping for, but it's still very wearable. It must have room for two 2.5 inch hard drives, so there is a size limit for such a device. I used drives from two Seagate 5TB external hard drive backups and installed them in this case. As others have pointed out, this voids the warranty on these drives, but given the significant price difference between the internal and external versions of this drive, I didn't think the warranty was worth the money. You can buy a third 5TB drive for the guaranteed price. At first I was concerned that the RAID enclosure would draw more current than the USB port could supply. But as it turns out, it has absolutely no problem when used on a MacBook with a USB 3.1 port. I've tried it on a 2016 MacBook Pro (13" Touch Bar) and a first generation 12" MacBook and both powered the case with no issues. But you have to connect directly. Do not place it behind a USB hub. I'm using it in RAID 0. It runs faster than expected, reaching read/write speeds well over 200MB/s. And that's more than I need. If you're looking for a truly portable external drive up to 10TB, this is it.

Pros
  • Quick replacement
Cons
  • boring packaging
