My test of this stud finder: I installed 1/2" unfinished drywall. The screws are visible so I know exactly where the studs are. The studs are standard 2x4 lumber. I turned on the spike finder, the is set to 1/2" by default, and calibrated as instructed. For some unknown reason, it is having trouble detecting some hairpins while detecting others normally (see my video). I tested it again after changing scan mode from 1 /2 had changed to 1" (I didn't video this). This time the thorn finder found all the thorns, but with an odd side effect. The studs that previously detected well in 1/2" mode were now in 1 "mode wider than their actual size. However, I was still able to determine the center of the hairpin. He did a good job of identifying the areas where the electrical wires run. Is di Is this spike finder perfect? no Can it be used? Yes, and I would still recommend it given its very reasonable price, especially with the different modes on offer and the ability to detect electrical lines. Note, however, that you may need to switch modes if you're having trouble spotting some spikes. Finding the center of the bolt is the most important thing and this tool does it adequately.
